George Bellairs was the nom de plume of Harold Blundell (1902-1985), a crime writer and bank manager born in Heywood, near Rochdale, Lancashire, who settled in the Isle of Man on retirement. He wrote more than 50 books, most featuring the detective Inspector Littlejohn. He also wrote four novels under the alternative pseudonym Hilary Landon.

Originally published in 1951, Dead March for Penelope Blow is one of a series featuring Inspector Littlejohn of Scotland Yard. Littlejohn's lot is to be hustled off into the countryside assisting the investigations of local police who typically have little experience with major crime. In this case it is personal for Penelope Blow had come to London looking for him before returning home and unexpectedly meeting her maker. Littlejohn cannot but feel that her accident must be connected to her reason for seeking him out. The remaining members of the Blow family are not welcoming. As the remainder of a proud banking family, they resent the intrusion of police on their family tragedy. Or do they have something to hide? Having recently discovered the Littlejohn books, I have been cheerfully munching through them. I'm not usually one for police procedurals, but the flavor of the time & place, the varying attitudes of the local police toward the man from Scotland Yard, and the basic civility of most of the characters give these books an irresistible charm.Product details

Every book I read of Bellairs just brings me in more to Inspector Littlejohn. I guess he's Chief Inspector in this book. The one thing I can complain about in these books is they aren't numbered. I like reading all my books in the order they were written. This one is number 15 it says. Though most don't have the number on them. I'm sure there's so replace that has the order they were written I just haven't found it. I try & go by the dates they were written but that becomes difficult also. Back to this book though, its amazing all the ups & downs, ins & outs it has. These are such well written books its hard to pick a favorite, but I'd say this is on the top on my list of them. What a wild & confused family the Blows are, & it seems power& money is all they what. Mustn't be a scandal at all costs!! I hope you enjoy it.
Inspector Littlejohn is attending a murder trial and so is not available when Miss Penelope Blow seeks him out for advice. After she dies in an “accident,” Littlejohn decides to look into her death. It’s the least he can do, since he was unable to help the troubled little spinster when she was alive.
Littlejohn finds that Penelope belonged to a family of the town big shots. And that Penelope was the only nice person among them. The family is so hostile to interference that Littlejohn has to investigate on the sly, with the help of the servants, who despise their masters.
There are lots of unpleasant scenes with the arrogant Blows. At the same time all sorts of damning information leaks to Littlejohn from the humbler citizens of the town. As always George Bellairs gives us charming sketches of workmen, clerks and clerics — as well as searing portraits of the greedy, self-important Blows. The murdered Penelope emerges as so kind and generous, that I kept regretting her loss throughout the book.
The case is complex, and the investigation gets more interesting as it unfolds. While not the greatest of the Littlejohn mysteries, Death March for Penelope Blow is well done and rewarding reading.
The narrative is engaging and keeps the reader entertained throughout the mystery. The characters are well imagined and true to life. Inspector Littlejohn is an enjoyable character with whom to spend ones time.
As usual this book will hold your attention until the very end. Very hard to figure out the end as the twists and turns continually change your mind.
This probably one of the best I have read by Bellaire, fabulous mystery and a book that is very hard to put down. A very satisfying book to the end
I discovered this author when recommended another of his books entitled "Death of a Busybody."
Once again, thank you . This is the third book I have read and it did not disappoint. I thoroughly
enjoy most English mysteries and this series meets my expectations. This particular story centers around
an elderly lady trying to get in touch with Inspector Littlejohn (main character) because she is concerned
about the possibility that someone in her family is trying to poison another family member. Upon his return,
the Inspector decides to look into the matter because he learned that a mutual friend had suggested the
lady contact him. Unfortunately, due to a fatal accident (?) he is too late to speak with her and must
deal with the uncooperative remaining family members. Try this series. I think you will enjoy it.
